Trae Young to the Wizards: A Match Made in Heaven!
Trae Young has been traded to the Washington Wizards!
Early on in the season, Trae Young went down with an MCL sprain, which put him out of action. Due to the multiple-time All-Star being out of action, it led to the rise of Jalen Johnson. The 24-year-old led the Hawks to a winning record without Trae. When the point guard came back, the record was 2-8. Which led to the wider discussion about "Are the Hawks better without Trae Young?" It did not come out of the blue due to the record without him, which was 15-12. The former franchise point guard now saw that the squad was no longer his team. The Hawks were moving on without him, which then led to the request to the Washington Wizards. It left a lot of fans startled, but it makes sense in the grand scheme of things.
The request to get traded to the Washington Wizards surprised the entire NBA world. No notable star has ever requested a trade to the Wizards. So a lot of fans were clowning the veteran guard for going there. Accusing him of chasing "empty stats" or "trying to get paid" instead of looking at the big picture. The NBA landscape has changed from his historical run in 2021. Guards like Jalen Brunson. Cade Cunningham, Tyrese Maxey, and Haliburton have outpaced Trae Young as the top guard in the East. Now, the multiple-time All-Star looks to get a new role where he will be able to thrive.
A perfect and ideal trade for the Washington Wizards, as this was a low-risk, high-reward type of deal. The 27-year-old point guard now has the lowest market value of his career. To acquire him, the deal included only Cory Kispert and CJ McCollum, and it did not include any draft picks. The only concern with this deal is Trae Young's future contract extension. This is something Will Dawkins will have to deal with, and it could determine the future of the team. Adam Silver is changing the draft to stop tanking teams from being rewarded. This means Trae can help his team win more games.
The new NBA has made it to where you have to be a competent defender in order to lead a team to a championship. Trae Young is a god-awful defender but not a fault of his own. He is too small to be able to handle stronger and bigger guards on opposing teams. His weak off-ball skills and lack of dominance as a scorer have made Young a mid-level star. Now, no longer having expections of being a star he fits perfect for the Wizards. He is not expected to be the franchise player but a floor fisilator who organizes the offense. The Wizards have young talent, including Kyshawn George, Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, and Bilal Coulibaly. They will gain a lot by playing with the veteran guard. Along with Tre Johnson, the rookie who will benefit from the leadership of Trae. Trae Young's role will shift from being the franchise player to a key playmaker. He will focus on improving the Wizards' game through his leadership.
This was a match made in heaven with Trae Young and the Wizards. Next year’s draft, plus the growth of Alex Sarr and Kyshawn George, might bring surprises to the NBA. Throughout history, the Wizards have faced challenges as an organization. Yet, in recent years, there seems to have been a change. The Washington Wizards finally found their way. They made smart moves in drafts and trades. If everything plays perfectly, then the Wizards can be one of the most exciting teams next season.
