Memphis Grizzlies Pivot to Relevancy?
The Memphis Grizzlies had a strong off-season. They cleared salary by trading Desmond Bane. Jaren Jackson Jr., one of the best defenders in the league, got his money that is well deserved. Along with keeping Cam Spencer and Santi Almada, adding to their further depth. Ty Jerome and KCP have shown success on other teams and look to translate it over to Memphis.
Memphis Grizzlies Pivot to Relevancy? After last year's tough playoff run, the Memphis Grizzlies decided to move on from last year's team. They swapped Desmond Bane for four unprotected first-round picks and role player KCP. Memphis has committed to its stars, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Ja Morant. They also have draft picks to address gaps in their roster. If needed, they can restart the rebuild. Along with extending Jaren Jackson Jr., who had a great season last year, making the All-Star team. The big man is one of the best defenders in the league and a good off-ball player. Extending Santi Aldama was great, as he is a young player who can open the floor up. Signing Ty Jerome who was one of the best Sixth Man last season. Cam Spencer brings the depth needed on the team. The Grizzlies look great on paper and could make a huge impact next season.
Jaren Jackson Jr. was incredible last season, earning himself a spot on the All-Defensive second team. The 2023 Defensive Player of the Year made a strong comeback after injuries last season. He’s one of the top rim protectors and perimeter defenders in the league. He shoots 37.5% from three-point range and 54% near the basket. JJJ stood out on both ends of the court. He led the team to the playoffs, even with Ja Morant missing games. For a multi-talented player, there are a lot of holes in his game, with his lack of ability to rebound. It led to him having a bad playoff run, which earned him some nonsensical slander. Like Kendrick Perkins calling him "overhyped." That's a silly statement, especially since Jaren is excelling in a strong role. He's helping Memphis become a competitive team in the West. Memphis made a smart choice by extending Jaren Jackson Jr. to a $240 million deal. It's tough to replace the defensive impact he has, which made this the right move. The Grizzlies wisely invested in their depth, making the Santi Aldama deal a great fit.
The forward, Santi Aldama, was a good extension, as he is now making $17.4 million per season. Santi is a player who can step up as the third option with his ability to stretch the floor and make the right passes. He can either fit well off the bench or play alongside the starters. With Desmond Bane being traded, it has opened up the possessions for the 24-year-old. The Grizzlies front office scored a win by keeping Santi and Cam. They also added veteran Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
Cam Spencer is an energetic young player who has shown to be a pest. The 25-year-old may not have impressive stats, but it’s clear why he plays. Ja Morant called him a "psychopath" for his intense play. Grizzlies legend Tony Allen dubbed him "basketball player Tom Thibodeau." Cam has proven his value on the court and earned himself a new contract. KCP had a down year, which has led him to be traded. The veteran guard, a key player on two championship teams, will come off the bench. He'll add both scoring and defense. With lower expectations, he could bring good minutes of play in a limited role. KCP and Cam Spencer are great for the bench depth for the Grizzlies, but the man that is going to lead the way is Ty Jerome.
The biggest free agent signing for the Grizzlies was Ty Jerome. After an amazing regular season and nearly winning Sixth Man of the Year, Ty was expected to get paid. He had a huge role in helping lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to the first seed of the Eastern Conference. Jerome will play well for the Grizzlies, as he can step up as a starter if Ja Morant gets hurt. A talented on-and-off-the-ball player who can make passes. The main question is how he will fit with Scottie Pippen Jr. Pippen Jr. had a strong season and wants to keep that going. It will be interesting how the undersized off-the-bench backcourt will do next season. The Grizzlies could be one of the most exciting teams next season.
Next season, teams like the Rockets will rise in the stacked West. The Minnesota Timberwolves aim for a finals trip. Oklahoma wants to defend its title. Meanwhile, the Spurs and Mavericks hope to climb up. The Grizzlies have pivoted to ensure they can compete with other teams out west. The front office made a trade involving Desmond Bane's contract. They kept their star player and two role players. The Grizzlies acquired a Sixth Man who has proven to be a good regular-season player and someone who can step up. Along with signing a veteran champion who can bring in proper energy off the bench. Memphis has many returning players, including Ja Morant, Brandon Clarke, GG Jackson, and Vince Williams. Returning second-year players like Jaylen Wells and Zach Edey are expected to make a jump. The Memphis Grizzlies have built a strong roster. The front office made smart moves after last year's disappointing season.
