Karl-Anthony Towns: A Superstar?!
In his tenth year in the NBA, Karl-Anthony Towns has played like a superstar. Being in the discussion for the MVP award, being the best big man in the Eastern Conference. Along with having one of the best offensive players in the league.
Since 2015, we have waited for Karl-Anthony Towns to turn into a superstar. His time on the Timberwolves was tough. His duo with Andrew Wiggins did not meet expectations. The only success he saw in his time there was last year when reaching the conference finals. So it came as a shock to all this offseason when Minnesota traded away KAT to New York in exchange for a lesser player. Now, in a better environment and team, Towns has reached the potential we all once expected him to reach. He is on a tear, becoming the best big man in the Eastern Conference and becoming an All-Star this season. So far in the regular season, he has played like a superstar!
This season, Karl-Anthony Towns has been incredible to watch. He's climbing the MVP ladder and putting the Knicks in the title race. One of the best off-ball players who has done a good job in playing off of guys like Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. KAT has done one hell of a job in taking over the scoring load. He is great at scoring on the post, attacking the basket, and shooting threes. One talent that he shined bright this season is KAT's ability to pass. He is great at finding Hart, OG, and Bridges on the cut or finding their spots on the three-point line. Towns' hand-off passes and pick-and-roll game have been a delightful experience to watch. Karl has played with more aggression on the offensive end, which we haven't ever seen from him. Changing the image of him being soft on the offensive side. But the worry has been his defense.
The Knicks are built with good defenders, like OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges. They can get the stops needed. With how physical these players are, it makes it easy for Towns, who's a bad defender. He isn't required to be an elite rim protector. Which is not KAT's strong suit. This made Minnesota trade for Rudy Gobert. Now being the sole big man with Mitchell out, many hope he improves his defense. It could be a problem against the Cavaliers or Celtics, as they are bigger teams that can attack the basket. KAT is required to at least be capable of being able to protect the basket. In the regular season, the offense gets more freedom, but in the playoffs, when the game gets a lot slower, he will be required to play a lot more defense.
Karl-Anthony Towns has been a top regular-season player for a decade. But he struggles in the playoffs. His poor play in last year's playoffs cemented a negative stereotype: he is not a playoff player. Now, with a new team, the hope is that he can take this organization over the top and win the championship. Julius Randle's poor play has led them to trade for the big. New York has to hope that this move can pay off. New York has to bank on Mitchell Robinson to return healthy. He could ease the pressure on Towns on the defensive end and could play next to the big man. The Knicks will finish strong. But the Celtics and Cavs could challenge them in the 2025 postseason.
This is the Karl-Anthony Towns we have never seen before. He has become the superstar that we were never expecting over the past five years. Towns and Brunson are among the best pairs in the league. Talented wing players have also helped a lot. With Joel Embiid injured, KAT is now a top center in the East. It has been awesome to see Towns play for an organization that cares about winning. He could be a huge factor as to why the Knicks hold the Larry O'Brien trophy in 2025.
