Donovan Mitchell: Underrated!
Donovan Mitchell has been one of the best shooting guards since coming to the league. Leading the Cavs to regular season success with a record of 18-3. With the success he has produced on the court, for whatever reason, he does not receive his flowers.
Since 2017, Donovan Mitchell has been one of the most underrated players in the league. For the life of me, I do not understand why. Coming to the league, Mitchell has been one of the best shooting guards. He defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in his first season. He made his name known around the league after coming in second place in Rookie of the Year. In 2021, the Jazz secured the first seed with Spida leading the way. And in his first season in Cleveland, he earned his First NBA Team nomination. So far, Donovan has been a monster this year. He is leading Cleveland to the first seed, dominating every night. With James Harden fading away in the 2020s, Mitchell has become one of the best shooting guard in the league.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have been incredible this year. Kenny Atkinson is a new addition. He has done an incredible job of getting these players to gel together. Donovan Mitchell has been on a tear. Averaging 24 points per game, with 39% shooting from three and 45% field goal. He is great at controlling the pace of the game. Mitchell's ability to drive to the rim and finish around the basket is awesome. Donovan is great at using his pick-and-roll so he can explode to the basket. And in the three spots, he is dangerous. Donovan can create his shots and separation. This makes him unguardable on the court. Spida is great at using his strength and explosion to get his baskets. Which makes him a key to Cleveland's success and makes him the best shooting guard in the league.
So far into the season, the Cavs have been a surprise this year. Leading Cleveland to the first seed with an 18-3 record. They have only lost to the Atlanta Hawks twice and the Boston Celtics. With Donovan Mitchell looking like an All-NBA player this year. Under JB Bickerstaff, it was unclear if Garland and Mitchell could work well together. But this season they have played well off each other. Even the big man fit has panned out. Kenny Atkinson has elevated the floor for Cleveland. One of their best acquisitions next to Mitchell. But despite that, it feels like Donovan is not getting the credit he deserves.
Donovan Mitchell is coming close to a Hall of Fame career. He already has five All-Star selections under his belt and an All-NBA Team. If he continues at this level of play, there is no doubt that he could end his career wearing an orange jacket. But the NBA world does not like to give him his flowers. Donovan Mitchell has been a top-three shooting guard in the league. A player who has been able to lead his teams to top-three seeds for a few seasons. Cleveland is lucky. They kept their franchise player. He keeps leading his teams to success.
