Detroit Pistons: A Hire For Competence.
What a disastrous season the Pistons had last year. It was a dumpster fire of a season in which we saw no development of a rebuilding team. Detroit went on to pay Monty Williams 78.5 million dollars, which made him one of the highest-paid coaches. The way he was able to develop the Suns was incredible. It is an irrelevant team that a year later made the NBA Finals. Everyone expected him to have a similar effect on the Pistons. But man, what an embarrassment last season was. With Killian Hayes as the starting point guard, Jaden Ivey needed to get playing time. The team had the worst record in the league. The front office had to do something, which led to the firing of Monty Williams. Now, this off-season, the Pistons have hired J.B. Bickerstaff.
JB Bickerstaff had a great season with the Cavs. The start of 2024 was incredible for the Cavs. Despite dealing with injuries, the Cavs became a top-three seed. The defense was great, as they were in the in the top six in defense. Since the post-LeBron era, JB has been able to turn it around. He was able to set up a great culture for Cleveland, which led to the trade of All-Star Donovan Mitchell. His season collapsed in disappointment. Being taken to seven by the Orlando Magic was something that shouldn't have happened. Along with losing in five against the Celtics. The writing was on the wall. It was clear that Bickerstaff would no longer remain the coach of the Cavs. Now, he is looking for a new job in the neighboring state of Michigan.
The Pistons are desperate for culture. They have been trash since 2020. Detroit has not seen a deep playoff run since the 2000s. A legendary franchise that wants to reconquer its aura. With the first pick, Cade Cunningham is the star to lead the way. Jalen Duren, praised by legends like Paul George. Viewed as one of the upcoming centers that can become a key factor. Jaden Ivey has to rebuild his value after bad coaching. Along with a lot of young guys who have the chance to contribute. Now, JB has to establish a culture of winning. The way he managed to do it in Cleveland. Making it one of the best teams in the East last season. The expectation is that he can make the Pistons into a competing team. A team that can compete with other franchises night in and night out. A coach that can be a voice. The Pistons are dying for an identity on both ends of the court. That can be possible this season.
JB Bickerstaff isn't the best coach in the league, but he is very competent. He knows how to get the best out of his players on the defensive end. That is something that the Detroit organization is dying for. A guy who can be a consistent voice and take players into account for their weaknesses. Turn the many young guys on the roster into winning basketball players. Monty did not want to coach; JB wants to coach and will take this opportunity. Like Ime Udoka changed the future of the Rockets. There is a chance for the Pistons to change their culture under Bickerstaff.
