A Quiet Trade.

The New Orleans Pelicans and Washington Wizards pull off a quiet trade. For the Wizards, it may not be a needle mover, but it gives them future flexibility. For the Pelicans, it looks like they plan on competing next season.

Joe Dumars administration has started with the trade of CJ McCollum and Jordan Poole. New Orleans looks to compete instead of being sellers with this move as they added some youth to their team. Poole will bring scoring and ball handling to the Pelicans. This is very important because Dejounte Murray will miss the whole season next year. New Orleans, if healthy, could be a playoff team but not a contender. With this off-season, a lot of teams are being sellers. This confused the NBA world as buyers instead of sellers.

This was a good trade for the Washington Wizards as they look to invest in their youth. This deal creates chances for Bub Carrington. He had a strong rookie year. It also benefits AJ Johnson, a young player they acquired in the Kuzma trade. CJ might get traded to another team soon. Or, he could be a solid veteran player, but that doesn't seem necessary. Khris Middleton has chosen to pick up his player option worth $33 million. Also, Marcus Smart is in the final year of his contract and might be traded. The Wizards could continue to be sellers, setting themselves up for the future.

Wizards GM Will Dawkins comes from the Oklahoma City Thunder culture. He has focused on flexibility, from handling a tough Bradley Beal contract to clearing $100 million in cap space next season. The Wizards are in a position where they could make big deals and build on their foundation. Kelly Olynyk, the aging big man, could be good for Alexander Sarr's development next season. For the Pelicans, they look to be a good playoff team with the Jordan Poole trade. He can be a good scorer and playmaker next to Zion Williamson and Trey Murphy III. Saddiq Bey is coming back from injury and could be a good shooter for the Pelicans. This trade seems like a hidden win for both the Wizards and the Pelicans. It all depends on their health and playoff chances.
